いきなりですが、ピアノ買うことになりまして・・・
ピアノを買う機会なんて、そうそうあるものではありません。
これはもう、記事にするしかないのでは？と思っていました。
・なぜ買い替えることになったのか
・どんなふうに選んだのか
・悩んだポイント
・家族の反応
などなど、
連載にして少しずつ書いていこう、と。
・・・ただ
気づいたら、ピアノが家に来ていました（笑
あれ？
まだ何も書いてないのに？
というわけで、
想定とはまったく違うスタートになりましたが、
まずは「なぜ買い替えることになったのか」から書いておこうと思います。
我が家で長年使っていたピアノのこと
これまで我が家で使っていたのは、
ヤマハのアップライトピアノ。
YAMAHA U2M（以下、U2）
いわゆる、
少し前の世代のスタンダードなアップライトピアノです。
このピアノ、
実家にいたころから使っていたもので、
付き合いとしては40年近くと、かなり長め。
・子どもの頃の練習
・大人になってからの再開
・子どもたちがピアノを始めてからの日常
全部、このピアノと一緒でした。
正直に言うと、
大きな不満があったわけではありません。
ちゃんと鳴るし、
真面目で、素直で、
「練習するには十分すぎるピアノ」。
調律師さんのひと言が、ずっと頭に残っていた
ただ、ここ数年。
毎回来ていただいている調律師さんから、
少しずつ、同じような言葉を聞くようになりました。
「状態は悪くないので、
すぐにどうこうなるわけではないですよ。
ただ、そろそろ“使用限界”を意識する時期かもしれませんね」
言われた瞬間、
「今すぐ買い替えなきゃ！」という話ではありませんでした。
でも、
・経年劣化は確実に進んでいること
・大きな修理が必要になっても、部品がなくて修理できない可能性
・この先、どれくらい使い続けるつもりなのか
そんな現実を、
少しずつ突きつけられる感じでした。
「あと何年使うつもり？」と考え始めた
私自身、ピアノは完全に趣味ですが、
子どもたちもピアノを習っています。
となると、
「この先、
あと10年？15年？
同じピアノを使うとしたら？」
という問いが、
だんだん現実味を帯びてきました。
・子どもが成長していく
・弾く曲も変わっていく
・家で過ごす時間も増えている
「まだ使える」だけで判断するよりも、
これからの時間を、どんな音で過ごしたいか。
そこを一度、ちゃんと考えた方がいいタイミングなんじゃないか。
そんなふうに思うようになりました。
「検討しよう」と思った時点で、もう流れは止まらなかった
「一度、ちゃんと検討してみよう」
そう思って動き始めたら、
そこからは思った以上に早かったです。
試弾して、
話を聞いて、
比べて、
悩んで。
気づけば、
「あ、これ・・・好きだな」
という感覚に出会ってしまい。
結果、
ピアノが家に来ました（笑
U2へ、心からのありがとう
手放すと決めたとき、
改めて思いました。
このピアノがなかったら、
今の私たちの生活はなかったな、と。
派手じゃないけど、
ずっとそばで鳴ってくれていた存在。
「今まで、本当にありがとう」
そう思いながら、
最後に何度か鍵盤に触れました。
幸い、
同じ先生のところに通っているお子さんのご家庭に、
U2をお譲りすることになりました。
また誰かの日常の中で音を鳴らし続けてくれると思うと、
少しホッとした気持ちにもなりました。
おばあちゃんピアノですが、
もう少しだけ、子どもに寄り添って頑張ってほしいなと思います。

また改めて書こうと思っています。

— Before the “We Bought a New Piano” Series Even Began
This might sound sudden, but…
we bought a piano.
Buying a piano isn’t something that happens very often, so I thought,
“This is a perfect chance to turn it into a series.”
I imagined writing about things like:

Why we decided to replace our piano
-
How we chose a new one
-
What we struggled with
-
How the family reacted
I had it all planned out.
And then—
before I wrote a single word,
the new piano arrived at our house.
Wait.
Wasn’t I supposed to start the series before this?
So the plan changed a bit.
Instead of a neat, step-by-step series,
I’ll start with the beginning after all:
why we decided to replace our old piano.
The Piano That Had Been With Us for Decades
For many years, our family piano was a Yamaha upright.
YAMAHA U2M
—a classic, old-generation standard upright piano.
This piano had been with me since I lived at my parents’ house.
All told, we spent nearly 40 years together.

Childhood practice sessions

Picking up piano again as an adult
-
Everyday life after my own children started playing
Everything happened with this piano nearby.
To be honest,
I never had any major complaints.
It worked reliably.
Its sound was honest and straightforward.
It was more than enough for daily practice.
A Tuner’s Words That Stayed With Me
That said, over the past few years,
our piano tuner—who has been tuning it regularly—
started saying similar things each visit.
“The condition isn’t bad at all,
so there’s no urgent problem.
But it might be time to start thinking about the piano’s practical lifespan.”
It wasn’t a warning like,
“You need to replace it now.”
But it quietly pointed to reality:

Aging was inevitable
-
Major repairs might become impossible due to lack of parts

How long did we actually plan to keep using it?
Those thoughts began to accumulate.
“How Many More Years Do We Want to Play This Piano?”
I play piano purely as a hobby,
and my children are also taking lessons.
So naturally, I started asking myself:

Another 10 years?
-
15 years?
-
Using the same piano the whole time?
As the children grow,
the music changes.
The time we spend at home changes.
Instead of deciding based only on
“it still works,”
I began to think:
What kind of sound do we want to live with from here on?
It felt like the right moment to truly consider that.
Once We Started Looking, Things Moved Fast
“I’ll just look into it seriously.”
That’s what I told myself.
But once we started:
-
Trying different pianos
-
Listening
-
Comparing
-
Thinking (and overthinking)
Eventually, I had that moment:
“Oh… I really like this one.”
And just like that,
the piano arrived at our house.
A Heartfelt Thank You to the U2
When we decided to let it go,
I realized something clearly.
Without this piano,
our current life probably wouldn’t exist.
It wasn’t flashy.
But it was always there, quietly sounding beside us.
“Thank you. Truly.”
I touched the keys a few more times before saying goodbye.
Thankfully, the U2 is going to a family whose child studies with the same piano teacher.
So it’s not retiring just yet.
It’s an old piano now,
but I hope it will continue supporting another child’s music for a little while longer.

especially how it felt to play it for the first time.
